PRESENTATION EVENING 2017

This year’s Presentation Evening was again held at Linden House, Tettenhall on Friday 7th July.

Proceedings began at 7.30pm when Rita welcomed everyone to the event before starting the evening off with a loud explosion of party poppers

There then followed a silver service three course meal of Minestrone Soup or Iced Melon with Ginger for starters, Chicken Chasseur or Roast Topside of Beef or Feta Cheese & Broccoli Bake for main course, with Profiteroles in Hot Bailey’s Sauce or Strawberries & Cream for dessert

Following the meal, which everyone said was excellent, Rita again graciously allowed Phil his yearly treat by allowing him to speak in public and he duly congratulated everyone on their achievements

The presentation then began proper with Rita and Phil ably assisted by Dee Yarnell, presenting the Beginners with their Medals, Certificates and Tee-shirts.

Marathon and Half Marathon Trophies where then presented to Sharon and Grace Ankers, Julie Lewis, Laura Heap and Frances Alink.

That done the evening then moved on to the individual award winners and as Rita explained, this year was again as difficult as ever, with around 200 runners in the club and everyone with a good case to put, just where do you start???

And to top it all, the evenings raffle raised £144 which was given to Sharon Ankers and Laura Heap for their respective charities.

A big thank you was given to all the people that helped on the night, included Nichola Turley-Butler, Donna Flavell, Ellen Clarke, Emma Fitzgerald, Michelle Marney, Sharon Green, Vikki Giddins and Dee Yarnall

Runner of the Year – Sharon Ankers

This is the award we give to the person who we think has been a true inspiration to others in the club.

Well, we didn’t have to look far this year.

This lady is a true inspiration.

She started as a Beginner with her daughter last year and since then has gone on to do numerous races for charity, a half marathon and even a full marathon.

Once she sets her mind on something, she shows true guts and determination to complete it.

She has had her fair share of injuries and ill health and so has her daughter but she always bounces right back and carries on as if nothing has happened.

She has become a very popular member of the club, always encouraging others with their running.

She lives a very busy lifestyle as a mother of three but she still manages to go out running on her own or by coming to the club encouraging others.

We are all so proud of you SHARON ANKERS; you are Dudley Ladies Runner of the Year 2017

An inspiration to us all.

Beginner of the Year – Michelle Marney

This award is for the Beginner who we think has added the most value to themselves since joining the course.

This person doesn’t have to be the fittest or the fastest in the group.

We judge it by the standard they were when they first came and what they can do now.

This lady has come on in leaps and bounds.

And as an added bonus, she has made loads of new friends and as soon as you meet her you are immediately struck by her caring personality, her positive mental attitude and her determination

She has achieved more than the 3 miles that we set her and she has gone on to do very nearly 6 miles.

Throughout the whole of the course, she has never said “I can’t do this”

Always very positive, she has said instead “I’ll try” or “I’ll give it a go”

Well she has tried and she has given it a go and she has succeeded.

She thoroughly deserves her achievement to be recognised tonight.

And I’m sure none of you will be surprised when we say MICHELLE MARNEY is Dudley Ladies Beginner of the Year Award for 2017.

Star of Year – Ellen Clarke

This award is called “Star of the Year”

Every year we look for one special person who is everything that Dudley Ladies is about. (Caring, helpful, motivational, supportive and a good friend to others)

This lady is all of those things and more.

This lady only joined us last year as a Beginner but had no trouble in fitting in straight away.

She soon got involved and took on the responsibility of leading a group and planning their routes and taking new members under her wing.

She welcomes everyone with her warm personality and never says No to anyone who wants to join the group, which continues to grow bigger and bigger and bigger as the weeks go by.

If you haven’t guessed who this lady is by now, here is one more clue.

Last weekend she should have run her first half marathon for which she had trained very hard.

She could not do it because of an injury picked up from how can I put it,

Over exuberant celebrating on the way back from Ascot

So what does she do instead of feeling sorry for herself?

She goes all around the course supporting everyone else that is doing the race.

That’s what makes this lady an absolute Star.

We are all so proud of what you have achieved and YOU are Dudley Ladies Star of the Year 2017.

ELLEN CLARKIE CLARKE

Most Improved Runner of Year – Frances Alink

This is an award we give to the runner that we think has improved the most over the last 12 months.

This year one lady in particular has stood out, every run she does, she pushes herself to the limit and more.

She has shown incredible willpower, guts and determination. She is steadily getting faster and running further.

We are extremely proud of her achievements. There are a couple of clues to help you guess who she is.

She comes from overseas, a country known for its canals, bridges and tulips.

She works with animals and lastly she did her first half marathon last Saturday in a superfast time of 2hours and 22 minutes, just 12 months after starting as a complete beginner just like a lot of you here tonight.

We are extremely proud of you, well done and keep it up FRANCES ALINK, YOU are Dudley Ladies Most Improved Runner 2017

Half Marathon Award Winners On The Night - Sharon Ankers, Julie Lewis, Laura Heap, Frances Alink

They all the above started as beginners on the beginners course, just like everybody else, not being able to run around the football pitch on their first night but with a bit of dedication and a good support group, it shows just what can be achieved.

Achievement Award – Laura Heap

This lady is a real inspiration to everyone

She is an absolute Star and Legend and it was one of the easiest decisions we had to make

Both Phil and I were impressed with her determination to continue running, even though she was pregnant with her fourth child.

Nothing was going to stop her from doing what she really enjoyed, ie/ running with her friends at the club.

This lady was running at the club 9 months plus pregnant on the Thursday night and on the Friday morning she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl at home.

Now she’s back at the club again just as if nothing had happened.

She’s a very strong lady and once she makes her mind up to do something, she does it.

We are all in awe of you LAURA HEAP,  you deserve it so much

Achievement Award – Sarah Raine

This lady thoroughly deserves her Achievement Award, she came to last year’s Beginners Course but picked up an injury and couldn’t continue.

She was gutted because she was enjoying it so much.

She returned again this year and to successfully achieve her 3 miles and we have been very impressed with her determination.

She really wanted to come back and it’s all down to positive attitude and strength of character.

So we are delighted to award SARAH RAINE an Achievement Award

Achievement Award – Norma Fitzgerald

This lady definitely deserves an Achievement Award and she should be very proud of herself.

She came to the club to support her grand-daughter and ended up staying.

She had a background in walking and so is pretty fit but running for her became a real challenge.

What she lacks in in speed, she more than makes up for with stickability and sheer guts and deserves all her hard work to be recognised.

So we are delighted to award NORMA FITZGERALD an Achievement Award

Achievement Awards – Jo, Louise and Beth Slomka

The next awards had to be given out as a group because in training, they were always together.

All through the 10 weeks, they have been running and encouraging each other on.

They are not the fastest and probably won’t ever run for England but they have listened and done exactly what has been asked of them.

They NEVER complain, they just get on with it.

So we are pleased to give these trophies tonight to a family, JO, LOUISE, and BETHANY SLOMKA

Achievement Award – Tracey Lowe

This lady deserves an achievement award and she should quite rightly be very proud of herself.

She has shown real determination over the past 10 weeks to achieve her goal of running 3 miles, which she completed without any fuss or bother.

She is a very quiet lady who tends to stay in the background.

We think that all her hard work should be recognised, so we are delighted to award TRACEY LOWE with an achievement award

Achievement Award – Denise Gridley

This lady has been wonderful to have on the course because she always has a beaming smile whenever you see her.

She should be proud of her achievement of running 3 miles.

She is not what you would call a natural runner.

She has had to work hard for what she has done BUT she’s done it.

She is an absolute pleasure to know. DENISE GRIDLEY

This Lady has been wonderful to have on the course.

She is an absolute pleasure to know SARAH PARKER

Achievement Awards – Joanne & Francesca Malpass

This is a joint award because we couldn’t split them up, they come as a pair.

They both came to the start of the Beginners in April but it was pretty obvious early on that they were a bit farther advanced than the rest of us.

So we put them in with an established group and they fitted in straight away, running different distances each time they came.

Both of them have progressed really well with their running and should be proud of themselves.

We know things have not been easy for you both at this time

But we are so glad that you could make it to the Presentation to receive these achievement awards JOANNE and FRANCESCA MALPASS

horizontal rule

This next lady is an absolute superstar.

She was a beginner last year and came to support her Mom

This young lady has done extremely well and thoroughly deserves an achievement award.

We were very impressed with her determination to do the 3 miles.

Not once has she admitted defeat or let anything beat her and she is now usually at the front of the group with Helen or Michelle

She has blossomed and her confidence has greatly improved

She has shown tremendous improvement over the past 10 weeks and we really hope that after her Wedding, she will continue to run with us at the club

BETH CROSS this is your moment to shine.

This next lady is an absolute super-star

She is a joy to be around and one of the nicest people you will ever meet

She always has a big beaming smile whenever you see her.

She is one tough lady who loves a challenge.

So we are very pleased to give this achievement award to LUCY MASTERS

This lady has done extremely well over the last 10 weeks to achieve her goal of running 3 miles and over.

She is not a natural runner and it doesn’t come easy to her.

Now she deserves for all this hard work to be recognised.

So we are delighted to award TRUDI LAW this achievement award

horizontal rule
