PRESENTATION EVENING 2018

This year’s Presentation Evening was again held at Linden House, Tettenhall on Friday 13th July.

Proceedings began at 7.30pm when Rita welcomed everyone to the event before starting the evening off with a loud explosion of party poppers

There then followed a silver service three course meal of Minestrone Soup or Iced Melon with Ginger for starters, Chicken Chasseur or Roast Topside of Beef or Feta Cheese & Broccoli Bake for main course, with Profiteroles in Hot Bailey’s Sauce or Strawberries & Cream for dessert

Following the meal, which everyone said was excellent, Rita again graciously allowed Phil his yearly treat by allowing him to speak in public and he duly congratulated everyone on their achievements

The presentation then began proper with Rita and Phil ably assisted by Nicki Marsh, presenting the Beginners with their Medals, Certificates and Tee-shirts.

Marathon and Half Marathon Trophies where then presented to Sharon and Grace Ankers, Laura Heap, Chelle Farmer-Lewis, Dawn Homer, Michelle Marney, Julie Lewis, Jo Slomka-Moore and Kay Wright

That done the evening then moved on to the individual award winners and as Rita explained, this year was again as difficult as ever, with around 200 runners in the club and everyone with a good case to put, just where do you start???

And to top it all, the evenings raffle raised £161 which was given to Michelle Marney for her Guide Dogs For The Blind charity.

A big thank you was given to all the people that helped on the night, included Jo and Louise Slomka and Nicki Marsh

Runner of the Year – Michelle Marney

This is the award we give to the person we think has been a true inspiration to others in the club.

Well we didn’t have far to look this year.

This lady is a true inspiration, once she sets her mind on something she shows true guts and determination to complete it.

She started as a Beginner last year, she has done lots of races, usually for charity, she has had her fair share of injuries and ill health but she always returns stronger than ever.

She is a very shy, very kind lady who prefers to stay in the background but none the less has become one of the most popular member of the club, always encouraging others with their running.

She always carries a bag of Jelly Babies for after a run, which she freely hands out and is one of the kindest, most caring ladies we have ever had the privilege of meeting

And we are all so very proud of MICHELLE MARNEY

Our Runner of The Year 2018

Beginner of the Year – Lisa Maskell

This is the award for the Beginner who we think has added the most value to themselves since joining the course.

We judge it by the standard they were when they first came and what they can do now.

And this lady has come on in leaps and bounds..

Even though she leads a very busy and stressful lifestyle, she always turns up with a smile and a positive attitude and she has gone on to achieve more than the 3 miles that we set her.

Throughout the whole of the course, she has never said “I can’t do this”, instead she has always said “I’ll try give it a go”

Well she has tried and she has given it a given it a go and she has succeeded.

She thoroughly deserves her achievement to be recognised and we're sure no one will be surprised when we announce LISA MASKELL as Beginner of The Year Award 2018

Star of Year – Nicki Marsh

This award is called Star of the Year

Every year we look for one special person who is everything that Dudley Ladies is all about.

Caring, Helpful, Motivational, Supportive and a good friend t others.

This lady is all of those things and a lot lot more.

She has won this award before and EVERYONE in the club knows her.

She welcomes everyone with her warm personality and gives advice and help.

This lady is an absolute Star, we are all so very proud of what you have achieved.

You are Dudley Ladies Star of the Year 2018

NICKI MARSH

Leadership Award – Ellen Clarke

This award is new for 2018

It is for the person we think has shown good Leadership Skills.

This person has to show that she can take charge of a group, she can motivate them to achieve more, she can build relationships with everyone in the group, she can listen to each and every one of them, she can also give praise and encouragement when they need it.

There are a quite few people in the club who could have won this award but this year we have chosen someone who has stood out for us as a good Leader.

This lady joined us in 2016, not having run before, not having much confidence and not knowing many people.

She has developed into such a different person.

She runs regular now and always has a group around her who she encourages and gives advice to,

She plans the routes and motivates every single person in her group.

We are very proud of what you have achieved and you thoroughly deserve Dudley Ladies Leadership Award ELLEN CLARKE

Most Improved Runner of Year – Kay Wright

This is an award we give to the Runner that we think has improved the most over the last 12 months.

This year one lady in particular has stood out.

Every run she does, she pushes herself to the limit and more.

She has shown incredible will-power, guts and determination, which we witnessed at the recent Blackcountry Half Marathon.

She is steadily getting faster and running further.

We are extremely proud of her achievements.

So will done KAY WRIGHT, your family should be very proud of you

Marathon Awards - Sharon Ankers, Grace Ankers and Laura Heap

Laura did the London Marathon again soon after giving birth to her 4th child.

Almost as bad as running a marathon is walking one and that exactly what Sharon and Grace Ankers did when they undertook the Moonwalk in their decorated Bra’s

Well done to you all.

Half Marathon Award Winners On The Night -

Chelle Farmer-Lewis, Dawn Homer, Michelle Marney, Julie Lewis, Jo Slomka-Moore, Ellen Clarke, Laura Heap and Kay Wright

They all the above started as beginners on the beginners course, just like everybody else, not being able to run around the football pitch on their first night but with a bit of dedication and a good support group, it shows just what can be achieved.

Achievement Award Anne Roberts

This lady has done extremely well and has been a real inspiration to others on the Beginners Course, it was one of the easiest decisions we had to make and definitely deserves an Achievement Award.

She always turns up with a big smile on her face and a positive attitude.

She is a very quiet lady who just gets on with it and with no fuss.

I’m sure she will be totally surprised and overcome by this award but we were impressed with her dedication and quiet determination.

So this is your chance to shine ANNE ROBERTS

horizontal rule

Achievement Award Aimee Smallman

This lady has shown real determination to achieve her goal of running 3 miles.

We don’t think she’ll ever run for England but what she lacks in speed, she more than makes up for with stickability and sheer guts to finish.

She has also achieved more than was asked of her through hard work and determination.

So we are very pleased to give this Achievement Award to AIMEE SMALLMAN

horizontal rule

Achievement Award - Christine Howes

This lady has been an absolute pleasure to have on the Beginners Course.

She first came last year to do the course but couldn’t get to the Presentation night due to personal reasons.

She came again this year and fitted in straight away with a large friendly group.

She’s not a speedy lady but her positive attitude and determination helped her achieve her goal.

This lady should be very proud of herself

She is an absolute pleasure to know - CHRISTINE HOWES

horizontal rule

Achievement Award - Emma Morgans

This lady has been an absolute Superstar on the Beginners Course.

She has progressed very quickly, done extremely well and thoroughly deserves her achievement award for what she has done in such a small space of time.

She pushes herself to the limit on every run and never gives up.

We are sure that there is still more to come from this lady

So watch this space next year for EMMA MORGANS

horizontal rule

Achievement Award - Chelle Farmer-Lewis

This lady proves what everybody says about Dudley Ladies, which is “Once a Dudley Lady, Always a Dudley Lady”

Once people join, they may get injured, they may get pregnant, life may kick in or they might move away but sooner or later they always return and are welcomed back with open arms.

This lady first joined us last year before taking time out but she came back and fitted in again as if she had never been away.

She is an absolute inspiration to everyone in the club, we’ve lost count of the number of races she has done, she does one every week and would do more if she could fit them in.

She leads a very busy lifestyle with a full-time job, a home and a family to look after but she still fits in coming to the club every week, encouraging everyone around her and always with a big wide smile on her face.

The last few months have not been easy for her and her family but she has bounced back and persevered.

She hasn’t given up and she’s showed the kind of determination that we’d all like to have.

So we are delighted to award CHELLE FARMER this achievement award

horizontal rule

Achievement Award - Maggie Hodson & Jamie Whitcombe

This is a something of a joint award because we couldn’t split them or give one without the other.

They are always together on their runs; the one never leaves the other behind and are inseparable.

They have both done extremely well to complete the 10 week Beginners course.

They both achieved their 3 miles and have gone on to do even further.

We are very impressed by their determination and positive attitude and are an example to others.

So we are delighted to give these achievement awards to MAGGIE HODSON and JAMIE WHITCOMBE

horizontal rule

Achievement Award - Laura Heap

If anybody deserves an achievement award tonight, it is this lady.

With 4 young children and free time at a premium, this lady still finds time to come to the club, run marathons and inspire and encourage all those around her before racing back home to carry on her busy lifestyle.

There are not many people who can run through the whole of their pregnancy.

Not only did she do that but she even ran on the Thursday night to take the beginners out before having a Vindaloo Curry and giving birth the following morning.

So if that doesn’t qualify you for an achievement award then nothing will.

We will be losing her shortly to start a new life in Ireland and we will all miss her greatly.

Laura will be leaving us shortly but we hope she will carry on running and possibly start up the Irish branch of Dudley Ladies.

Either way, I’m sure a few of us will be doing a run in Dublin to meet up again with LAURA HEAP sometime next year.

Achievement Award - Maggie O'Reilly

What a pleasure it has been to have this next lady on the Beginners Course

She has done extremely well and thoroughly deserves her achievement award.

This lady has had to work pretty hard to do what she has done.

She has blossomed and her confidence has greatly improved to the point where she even ran in the Halesowen 5k and Himley Race for Life recently.

She will tell you that 10 weeks ago that would have been an impossible dream

She twisted her ankle last week, so we are delighted that she is able to attend to receive this achievement award.

It was never more deserved.

So this is your time to shine MAGGIE O’REILLY

horizontal rule

Achievement Award - Pat Plaza & Pat Cook

This is another joint award because we couldn’t split these two up either.

They came as a pair and as absolute beginners in April, not knowing what to expect.

Since then they have improved with every run and were the first two ladies to do their 3 miles on a very warm sticky Sunday morning.

Throughout the Beginners Course they have never complained, they have done everything that was asked of them and they thoroughly deserve these awards.

So well done PAT PLAZA and PAT COOK, come on down

horizontal rule

Achievement Award - Louise Slomka

This lady came to the beginners last year with her sister-in-law and daughter and after 12 months of running and being careful with her eating, is unrecognisable from the person that tentatively took her first steps with us.

She has lost so nearly 8 stone in weight and her running and fitness has improved tremendously.

She is always motivating the people around her and they too are now committed to running further and doing a little bit extra.

She has spent a lot of time with this year’s Beginners, encouraging and supporting them with their running.

So well done LOUISE SLOMKA, this is your moment to shine.

horizontal rule

Achievement Award - Rebecca Price

This lady has shown real determination over the past 10 weeks to achieve her goal of running 3 miles.

She’s not a natural runner and does have a few health issues, so she has to work very hard to do what she’s done but she’s done it.

She is an absolute pleasure to know and have in the group.

So please come up to the stage REBECCA PRICE for your well-deserved achievement award.

horizontal rule

Achievement Award - Liane Purnell

This lady should be very proud of herself.

She has been committed to the Beginners Course from day one and has always pushed herself to do that little bit extra.

She always gives 100% and her improvement has been amazing which is all down to her very positive attitude and strength of character.

She did her 3 miles and has now achieved over 6 miles.

No matter how tough the hill or how long the run, she never complains, she just puts her head down and gets on with it.

She leads such a busy life, we don’t know how she fits it all in.

So LIANE PURNELL this is your time to shine.

horizontal rule

Achievement Award - Sue Houghton

This lady thoroughly deserves an achievement award tonight.

Both Phil and I were very impressed with her determination to do the 3 miles.

We know that she had wanted to run for sometime but never had the confidence to take that first step.

But she eventually came, took to it like a duck to water and fitted in straight away.

She has encouraged others around her with her positive attitude and has gone on to exceed all expectations.

She always gives 100% and her improvement has been amazing.

So we were very pleased to ask SUE HOUGHTON to come up on the stage to receive her award.

horizontal rule

Achievement Award - Sue Tracy

This lady definitely deserves an achievement award and should be very proud of herself.

She achieved her Beginners 3 miles and has gone on to do a lot more miles by running with the established group.

Her running has gone from strength to strength due to her positive mental attitude, strength of character, go faster shoes and a good support bra.

So well done SUE TRACY

horizontal rule

Achievement Award - Charlotte Phipps

This award was one of the easiest we had to make because this young lady definitely deserves her achievements being recognised.

Both Phil and I were very impressed with her determination to run the 3 miles.

She is usually found up at the front somewhere, she has always given 100% and her improvement and confidence has been amazing.

So we hope that she will carry on and continue to run with us for a long time to come.

CHARLOTTE PHIPPS you are a superstar.

horizontal rule

Achievement Award - Jane Chance

This lady has done extremely well on the Beginners Course, even though her first love is horses

She always turns up with a smile and a positive attitude and should be very proud of what she has achieved.

She thoroughly deserves her award tonight because as the song goes

“When the going gets tough, the tough get going”

And this lady is certainly one of those, so well done JANE CHANCE.

horizontal rule

Achievement Award - Verity Greene & Lydia Greene

This last achievement award is another joint award because these two ladies came to the course together and belong in the same family.

They have both done very well over the last 10 weeks and exceeded all expectations.

They have blossomed and their confidence has improved tremendously.

They have shown so much improvement over the past 10 weeks and we really hope that they continue to run with the club.

We are very proud of them and we know that their mom is very proud of them as well.

So well done LYDIA and VERITY GREENE
